Tu Dil to Khol Jara – Aashima Chadha
During on open mic in the Songs of Resistance workshop in November (2021), we had Priyanshu (from Karnataka) and Daanish (from Mohali Punjab) perform a duet. The song is written from the perspective of a river and each line is what the river would say or ask and this thought of listening to someone we would never imagine to voice makes it powerful! ‘Pyaasi’ is written by Vasu Dixit of Swarathma, and Hitesh Kewalya And sung along with Shubha Mudgal. The word ‘Pyaasi translates into thirst. Vasu Dixit was inspired to write this song after hearing a conversation on a train about the Kaveri River dispute, of how a river should be allowed to flow free. This was when the two states Karnataka and Tamil Nadu had faced severe droughts in 2009. The dispute continued for years bringing difficult times and riots with rulings of the Court, in the “The river asks, ‘Kahan se aayee, kahan hai jaana, kiski boli bolna hai ab?’ I’m coming from here [Karnataka] and then I reach Tamil Nadu, so what language should I speak?” The song stresses on the issue of water scarcity and how water is not to be commodified, or belonging to a particular political agenda.
