Video Story:
Modern slavery persists in India 47 years after it was outlawed. From the Kalahandi-Bolangir-Koraput region of western Odisha alone, 500,000 workers migrate each year to work as bonded labourers in the brick kilns of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. In the kilns, conditions are harsh-there are no toilets, drinking water is sourced from borewells, and the health risks from fly ash, coal dust and the ambient heat are severe. Workers give up their freedom to work under these conditions for lump sum advances.
