Mumbaikars are Against CAA, NRC and NPR: Jameela Begum
Jameela Begum is a firebrand activist fighting for housing and the basic rights of people in Mumbai.
She hails from a small village in Chittur, Andhra Pradesh. Growing up in a poor farmer’s household and being a girl, she was allowed to only study till 5th std to make room for her brother’s education. She did not stop her education though, learning sewing and enrolling into school again later. Turning 18 years meant marriage and that’s when Jameela made the journey from Chittur to Bombay. After domestic struggles as a young bride, she and her husband moved out to Anna Bhau Sathe Nagar, Govandi.
The event that turned Jameela into an activist was the illegal and brutal demolition carried out by the government of the settlements, including her home. This was 2006, where over 1 lakh people were rendered homeless and 16 children had died that summer without a roof. This deeply impacted her, infuriated and pained her.
She got associated with Medha Patkar and Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao Andolan (GBGBA) and has been active ever since. She decided to fight for her own and others’ rights.
It is to her credit that women from Govandi have been organized, sensitized and empowered about their rights. She ran free sewing classes for women and thanks to her push, many women are making a living for themselves, standing on their own feet. She organized classes for out-of-school girls. She also successfully ran a Balwadi (early education and daycare center) for 3 years in Mandala, Govandi. Jameela has brought people from a conservative atmosphere together to hold several campaigns, start learning centers and stop unjust demolitions across the city.
She has been an active voice not just for women from Sathe Nagar, but for poor, marginalized women across the country when she represented India at the World Social Forum, 2007 in Africa and highlighted the plight of women here.
Jameela has a way with words, putting complexities of women’s issues and experiences into simple language, which is so powerful. You need to hear her only for a few minutes to experience this.
She has been tirelessly campaigning and organizing against CAA-NRC-NPR and continues to keep a vigil on housing and education issues of the working class in Mumbai.

Shaheen Bagh: The Heart of Resistance | Unveiling the Truth behind Delhi Riots
Updated: Jun 2, 2021
Shaheen Bagh, a symbol of unwavering resistance against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), and National Population Register (NPR), emerged as the epicenter of anti-CAA protests in India. Since December 15, thousands of women, accompanied by their children, had been peacefully protesting at this site. However, on March 14, amidst the nationwide lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, the site was forcibly cleared in the national capital.
The peaceful protests at Shaheen Bagh took place against the backdrop of communal riots that shook the nation’s capital on February 24, claiming the lives of 52 individuals and leaving many injured. In response to these horrific events, the Delhi Police has filed approximately 80 chargesheets against around 600 people thus far, seeking to bring justice to those responsible.
One chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police, focusing on suspended AAP councilor Tahir Hussain, includes a mention of the owner of Al-Hind hospital. During the Northeast Delhi riots, this hospital played a crucial role in providing emergency treatment to numerous victims, showcasing the resilience and compassion of the community.
Another chargesheet recently filed by the Delhi Police in connection with the North-east Delhi riots highlights the name of DS Bindra, a dedicated social worker who actively participated in the Shaheen Bagh protests. The chargesheet alleges that Bindra, along with individuals like Salman Siddiqui, Salim Khan, Salim Munna, Shahdab, Athar, and others, played a role in orchestrating the riots in collusion with local instigators.
